Adrian Mallett
14/11/2017
1943-2017It is with great sadness that we announce the untimely death of Adrian Mallett, painter, print maker and former Head of Art at St. Francis’ College: an inspiration to all those he taught and a much loved father and friend.A man of many catchphrases: "gather round girls", "I'd never have this much trouble in a boys' school" or simply a laconic, drawn out "giiiirls". Adrian Mallet spoke of retirement for many years, but students always managed to persuade him to stay. An inspirational teacher, he would only allow girls to draw in biro, so that they couldn't rub out their work and learnt instead to work with their errors. He inspired hundreds of students, championing their creativity and individuality within the arts.As instigator of the Recycled Fashion Show, he raised thousands of pounds for the Kanyike project, changing the lives of hundreds of children in Uganda. He regularly took to the stage himself, strutting his stuff on the catwalk in a string vest or dancing in the Sixth Form Revue. Enviably photogenic, he can be seen posing in various images from his time at the college: sat in his favourite chair. striking a handsome pose, with his trademark knitted tie.
